Representation

Presentation of Self
- Goffman, 1990
- More abstract ways of thinking about identity that we also employ every day - clothes, media, people.
- People victimised because of this - assumptions made, prejudice.
- EG - Koop HT - baggy clothes - maybe quite self-conscious about his body. Bold position/smile - happy. Casual/ music.
- EG - Kevin Quad - leather jacket + greased hair = hardcore. Angry expression = scary/intimidating. Black = dark. Rebellious/dangerous/appearance - driven.

Burden of Representation
- History of social-realist film weighs on shoulders of new film makers and producers.
- Representation changed due to immigration - now negative images have devastating effects on lives of marginalised people.

Identity
- Gauntlett, 2007
"Each of us would like to think - to some extent - that we have social, personal qualities, which make us distinctive and valuable to the other people in our lives (or potential future friends). But does this mean anything? Is individuality just an illusion? Maybe we are all incredibly similar, but are programmed to value minuscule bits of differentiation".
- Buckingham, 2008
"A focus on identity requires us to pay close attention to the diverse ways in which media and technologies are used in everyday life, and their consequences both for individuals and social groups".
