Construction of Magazine Advertisement

I began by measuring the correct canvas size and inserting a base candle layer to build on top. The photo I used already had a black background, however it didn't stretch across the whole width of the page so I used the smudge tool to extend the width of the photo and blend in each area. I then inserted two new layers with other candles and reduced the opacity so all three layers could be seen. Again, the layers didn't quite equal the width of the page so I had to use the smudge tool to extend the sides and blend together. Following this, I merged all three layers and used the brush tool to colour the rest of the page above black to make the whole thing black with the candles at the bottom. I added a purple colour overlay and reduced the opacity to keep the same colour scheme as the rest of my works. I noticed that this purple overlay decreased the prominence of the flames so I used the magnetic lasso tool to cut around each flame and paste it on a new layer. I then decreased the opacity slightly and used the smudge tool to fix any edges.

I increased the size of the digipak by around 1 inch and inserted it onto the advertisement. To ensure that it was central I used Photoshop's inbuilt rulers and measured the distance between each side. Next, I added the white ruled border around the digipak using the line tool on a 3pt weight. I then added the text using the same font that I have used for the rest of my works to keep the same style. I centralised it using the ruler again and then added another 3pt rule inbetween the two lines.

I decided to add a quote in from Emily's Soundcloud page as I noticed that many of the advertisements I studied had quotes and ratings of the artists or bands. I chose one that I felt would encourage people to buy the album: "Emily is truly living and breathing music". This also fit in the space that I had and allowed me to use a reasonable font size, allowing the audience to read it easily. I inserted another 3pt rule to separate the text and keep it simple to read. I added four stars below the quote as this would allow the audience to see how good the album is without reading the quote as stars are a common rating symbol.

I added the logos at the bottom of the digipak after individually editing them on Photoshop to get rid of the background and decrease their size. Much like the back of the digipak, I used a rule to separate each logo. In all, the magazine has been constructed using the 'Z' format as it allows the audience to quickly scan the page, gathering the information that they require.

Overall, I'm pleased with how the magazine advertisement turned out and I feel that it follows the typical conventions that I found in my research investigations. I think I have included all the essential bits of information needed on a magazine advertisement and enhanced 'Emily's' star image by including further imagery of her. Below is the magazine advertisement:
