As I began analysing the articles the Mods and Rockers were
made to seem unruly and violent as they spoke of “violent gangs” of “youths”
who “terrified residents”. Similar to my research into the Teddy Boys it was
made clear that each group had their own identity (Italian fashion and
oily-biker leathers) and that they clearly took a disliking to each other in
the “battles” that occurred.
However, I found it interesting to read The Independent’s
article as it spoke of how some of the imagery and stories were made to seem
more violent as they were blown out of proportion. It seems that some reporters
and photographers paid the groups money to stage photos and act violent in
order to ensue moral panic and give society someone to blame negative events
on. Therefore, some news stories were fake or made to seem much more
out-of-hand and violent than they actually were. Despite this, one man did say
that events at Brighton were as violent as they seemed: “the violence was
nasty, but there weren’t guns”.
Ultimately, this leads one to believe that although the Mods
and Rockers were a group who sometimes caused trouble in certain areas, it
wasn’t always as bad as the news stories made out to be as they wanted to cause
people to panic.
